Information Architecture in Crisis Communication : A Case Study of krisinformation.se (English)
Abstract [en]
In times of crisis, such as natural disasters or security threats, public access to clear and well-structured information is essential. This study examines the information architecture of krisinformation.se, a Swedish governmental website that provides coordinated crisis communication to the public. The aim is to identify strengths and weaknesses in how information is structured, presented, and accessed on the site, especially during acute situations.
The study is based on Rosenfeld et al.’s (2015) four foundational systems of information architecture: organization, navigation, search, and labeling systems. A qualitative approach was adopted, combining a heuristic analysis of the website’s structure with a thematic analysis of a semi-structured interview conducted with the site’s editor. This dual-method design enables both an external and internal perspective on how the site functions and is perceived.
The results show that while krisinformation.se displays strengths in areas such as language clarity and inclusive content, there are significant weaknesses in mobile navigation, visibility of ongoing crises, and relevance of search results. These issues may hinder users' ability to quickly find and act upon critical information, particularly in stressful situations.
The study concludes that improved consistency in design, enhanced mobile adaptation, and better prioritization of real-time crisis content are necessary to strengthen the platform’s usability. The findings contribute practical insights for the development of crisis communication tools and broader discussions about user-centered digital public services.
