This study examines how public library websites support or hinder exploratory search behaviours. Focusing on the municipal libraries of Stockholm and Gothenburg, it analyses how catalog search system features like filtering, categorization, and related searches affect users' ability to explore information without a clear initial goal.

Using a mixed-methods approach, observations and surveys, the study draws on affordance theory, user experience (UX), and information architecture (IA). Results show that while both sites offer basic support, users encountered issues with metadata, unclear categories, and poor error handling. Gothenburg's site was perceived as more usable due to clearer tagging and related suggestions.

The study highlights the need for user-centred design in digital library systems to better support exploratory behaviours, aligning with the Swedish Library Act’s principles of accessibility and inclusion.
