Digital Product Passports in Practice : Organizational Readiness for Traceability and Transparency in Home Textiles (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Digital Product Passports (DPP) are a key component of the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which aims to promote circular economy, traceability, and transparency throughout a product’s life cycle. In the textile sector, furniture is expected to be included in the upcoming requirements within the next few years, which means that companies need to begin preparing for changing information flows and increased documentation demands. Despite this, many companies remain in the early stages of implementation, particularly within the home interior segment, where knowledge gaps and uncertainty prevail regarding the specific requirements. This study examines a Swedish home textile company using one of its wool rugs as a case product. The aim is to identify the actions and changes needed to meet the future DPP requirements. The study is based on a qualitative case study methodology using semi-structured interviews, complemented by literature and policy analysis. The results show that while the company currently holds several supplier-level certifications, it lacks a connection between certified information and individual products. Information gathering is currently fragmented, and there are no established structures or routines for product-specific traceability or digital information flows. The study identifies key challenges such as limited resources, technical capacity, and low prioritization of sustainability efforts. At the same time, there is strong operational-level engagement, which provides opportunities for proactive development. The conclusion is that the introduction of digital product passports should be viewed as a strategic opportunity to strengthen transparency, build customer trust, and future-proof the business model. This study contributes practical insights into how companies in the home textile sector can approach ESPR and DPP at an early stage.
