Material and Structural Optimization of Warp-Knitted Fabric for Chainsaw Protective Textiles : A study on Air Permeability and Moisture Transport without Compromising with Chainsaw protection and Weight (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Chainsaws can cause damage to the human body. As protection, warp-knitted saw protection textiles are used in protective clothing to minimize the risk of injury. Furthermore, forestry work is a physically demanding job and saw protection textiles require properties to maintain textile thermal comfort. This study has therefore examined the factors influencing the textile comfort without compromising with the saw protection properties. Additionally it analyzed the feasibility of using alternative materials, such as PP and R-PET, instead of PET. Six different textile constructions, variants 1-6, and a comparison sample have been analyzed as materials in this study, variant 7. Differences in the variants were yarn thickness, threading and material selection. The testing has been carried out to determine air permeability, water vapor resistance, saw protection properties and weight. The result shows that variant 3 had the highest air permeability and lowest water vapor resistance, which is also of better comfort properties compared to the reference sample. Furthermore, variants 4, 5 and 6 had some test specimens that passed the saw test, however, none of them met the performance that the reference sample had. The study showed that yarn thickness and construction had some influence and may have affected the permeability, water vapor resistance and saw protection properties but the results were not clear and could have been influenced by other factors. Alternative materials of PP and R-PET gave similar results of air permeability and water vapor resistance as PET, additionally the results showed potential for using PP and R-PET for saw protection properties.
