Shaping into freedom : Library activities in Swedish women's institutions (English)
Abstract [en]

As prison populations increase as a result of harsher sentencing laws in Sweden, the effects of this societal change on prison libraries have largely gone unexamined. Furthermore, the information needs of the female inmate population lacks comprehensive research on a global scale. This master's thesis aims to examine the discourses surrounding the women inmates as library users, their information needs, and the prison libraries function and purpose as a whole within the institution of correctional facilities. Using semistructured interviews with prison librarians, as well as examining the IFLA guidelines for prison libraries, a discourse analysis was performed with a focus on understanding the library through the concept of the heterotopia. Four separate discourses were identified: The Rehabilitating Prison Library, The Inmates as Regular Library Users, The Punitive Discourse and The Inmate as the Deviant. A discussion on how these discourses have been shaped differently in the different source material, as well as how these discourses can be understood historically and in comparison to previous research was then executed. The results indicated that as the punitive discourse becomes stronger in the general society, so does the discourse about the role of the library as a rehabilitative resource. It was also concluded that the librarians worked flexibly, and with an intersectional understanding of their users' information needs. The librarians also used their positions of power constructively to meet the information needs of the women inmates. Finally, it was concluded that how each prison organised their library services determined the flexibility with which the librarians could meet user needs, and that some prisons did not provide any library service at all to their inmates.
