Libraries in Sweden follow the same laws and regulations despite their differences regarding location, size and number of staff, to name three examples. The aim of this study is to discover the opportunities and the challenges library staff in rural municipalities in Norrbotten experience. Three questions were put together in order to gain knowledge about this: “What challenges do the participants in this study experience during their work at the library?”, “What strategies do the participants in this study use to deal with the challenges they face?” and “What opportunities do the participants in this study see with working for the locals?”. The method chosen for collecting data was semi structured interviews. Four interviews with library staff in four different rural municipalities in Norrbotten were analysed and categorised through The Four Spaces Model in order to answer the three questions guiding this study. The results show a lack of funding, accessibility and staff as the main challenges, while the participants still carry out the work with the resources available to them. They express how gratifying and inspiring the work can be, as well as the importance of libraries for the locals in rural municipalities. Because of the limited amount of research regarding this subject the findings of this thesis will be valuable for future studies.
