From a sustainable intention to an affordable habit : A study on how price, income and attitudes affect sustainable clothing consumption (English)
Abstract [sv]

Totalt deltog 94 personer inom målgruppen i studien.

Abstract [en]

Even though environmental awareness in society has increased, and despite that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting sectors, a clear gap exists between consumer’s attitudes and their actual behaviors, with many continuing to purchase clothing from fast fashion retailers. Thus, this study aims to deepen the understanding of why this gap remains. Specifically, it examines the relationships between consumer’s income levels and price sensitivity in relation to their clothing choices, in order to identify key barriers to more sustainable clothing consumption. To examine the significance of these factors, the study applies the Theory of planned behavior alongside theories of income effect and price sensitivity. The study is based on a quantitative method, where a survey was conducted using a combination of snowball and convenience sample. The questionnaire was distributed through social media and personal networks, targeting Generation Z respondents aged 18-30. A total of 94 individuals within the targeted group participated in the study. The results confirm the existence of an attitude-behavior gap, although there are indications that stronger pro-sustainability attitudes may correlate with more sustainable clothing choices. The findings also suggest that price is a significant barrier to sustainable clothing consumption, with lower income levels being associated with higher price sensitivity. Furthermore, the results indicate that consumers with stronger sustainable attitudes tend to exhibit a greater willingness to pay for sustainably produced clothing. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how income, price and attitudes interact as barriers to sustainable consumption. It provides a foundation for future research and insights to how these factors may facilitate the transition towards more sustainable consumption patterns within the fashion industry.
