”Is this for me?” : Young women’s thoughts on the marketing of STEM-education (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Women remain underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), despite ongoing efforts to broaden participation in these fields. This study explores how young women in upper secondary school perceive marketing of technical university programmes, and how such communication affects their sense of belonging and interest in STEM. Adopting a social constructivist perspective, the study draws on identity theory and representation to understand how marketing can shape perceptions of who belongs in STEM. The empirical material consists of three focus groups with female students considering their future education. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurring patterns in how participants respond to language, imagery and tone in marketing materials. The results indicate that many participants experience STEM marketing as emotionally distant and gender-coded, reinforcing a masculine image of the field. This contributes to feelings of exclusion and low identification, even among academically strong students. At the same time, participants expressed a desire for more emotionally authentic and relatable communication that reflects their own experiences and aspirations. The study contributes to research on diversity in education and highlights the importance of inclusive communication strategies to attract underrepresented groups to technical education.
