Sentimentanalysis and financial health : A quantitative study using FinBERT & GPT-4.1 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In the modern day the rapid development of AI has provided lots of useful tools in different working sectors. One technique, sentiment analysis, has proven itself incredible useful for determining sentiment in financial documents. One document where the sentiment is a key factor of the text for providing a good image of the company and interest new investors is the CEO statement in annual reports. But can the sentiment analysis be used to quickly determine other factors in the company like financial health? This study aims to provide insights if a positive sentiment of CEO statements in annual reports can be used to quickly determine a company with strong and positive financial health. To answer this question, we used two AI models, FinBERT and GPT-4.1, to perform two separate sentiment analyses on 63 companies CEO statements in annual reports from the period of 2019-2023 on the Swedish stock market Large Cap. To identify a correlation between a positive sentiment and financial health we used the sentiment result, Altman’s Z-score model score and the program SPSS to create scatter dot diagrams and calculated Pearson correlation coefficient. The result of FinBERT’s sentiment and the Z-score provided a result of a very insignificant small negative correlation that was most likely random. GPT-4.1’s sentiment result and the calculated Z-score on the other hand showed a small positive correlation, and had a significance at the 0,05 level. The conclusion of this study is therefore that sentiment analysis, with FinBERT, cannot be used to quickly identify a company with strong financial health based on a positive sentiment in the CEO’s statement. GPT-4.1 on the other hand, showed promise and future research can focus on testing this correlation on different markets. This study is written in Swedish.
