Transition to reusable menstrual protection : A study of consumer behavior and factors of change among young women (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Today disposable menstrual products are the most common option among people in Sweden, despite its impact on the environment. These products often contain plastic and chemical additives, which have a negative impact on the environment and long-term waste. In line with this, the interest in reusable alternatives that offer environmental and economic benefits such as menstrual cups, cloth pads and menstrual underwear is gaining. Despite this, the use is still low, especially among young women. This study examines the motivations and barriers that influence young women’s choice in menstrual hygiene choices. The study is based on a combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The aim is to understand how sustainability, accessibility, comfort, level of knowledge and social norms influence young women’s choices. Menstruation is still perceived by many as a private or sensitive topic, which is a contributing factor to the lack of conversation around reusable alternatives. For the shift to happen, it requires not only increased access to products, but also social support regarding the subject in everyday environments. An increase in use among friends was seen as something positive, as the willingness to test reusable alternatives increased.
