Sustainability Reporting in the audit industry : A comparison between large and medium-sized audit firms (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background and problem discussion: In a time when sustainability has become a central concern for both consumers and society, sustainability reporting has grown increasingly important for all companies, including those in the auditing industry. As a result, new directives have been introduced that influence the structure and requirements of sustainability reports. Despite these directives, previous research has identified differences in how companies report on sustainability across industries and regions. However, there is currently no prior research examining the similarities and differences in sustainability reporting within the auditing industry in Sweden. Purpose and research question: The purpose of this study is to examine how large and medium-sized auditing firms structure their sustainability reports and to identify similarities and differences in how environmental, social, economic, and other aspects are presented. The research question aims to explore the similarities and differences between the sustainability reporting of large and medium-sized auditing firms. Theory: The study is based on the theoretical framework of the Triple Bottom Line. The discussion and analysis of the results are grounded in stakeholder theory and legitimacy theory. Method: To address the study’s purpose and research question, a qualitative content analysis, supplemented by elements of a quantitative content analysis, was conducted on the annual and sustainability reports of six auditing firms. Data collection was carried out using a coding framework developed in advance. This method was chosen because it enables the identification of similarities and differences in how the firms construct their reports. Results: The results show that there are both similarities and differences in how individual auditing firms report on environmental, social, economic, and other aspects of sustainability. Discussion and conclusion: The results are discussed using stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory, and previous studies. The conclusion is that while there are similarities and differences between individual firms, these cannot be attributed to company size.
