Digital Marketing in Elite Football : A Study on Engagement and Team Identification on Instagram (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore how four of the most successful football clubs in Sweden’s top division, Allsvenskan, use Instagram to engage supporters and strengthen their relationship with the club, with a particular focus on supporter engagement and team identification. The study is designed as a qualitative multiple-case study and is based on a content analysis of 996 Instagram posts published one month before and one month after the 2024 season start. The data consists of posts and comments from historically successful Allsvenskan clubs, and the analysis identifies patterns in both content and follower responses. The results show that match-related content dominates in both volume and engagement, especially around wins and losses. Posts following defeats often generate more comments and emotional responses, interpreted as signs of strong team identification rather than mere dissatisfaction. Posts related to men's teams consistently receive more attention than those about women's teams, highlighting differences in perceived relevance and engagement. The study concludes that team identification is a key factor in supporter engagement. Football clubs have the potential to increase interaction on other topics, such as CSR and women’s football, by applying the same emotionally driven storytelling used in match communication. Social media should be seen as a platform for two-way communication and long-term relationship building, particularly in the context of Swedish football, where clubs are member-owned but operate in an increasingly commercialized environment. The study emphasizes the importance of treating social media as a space for dialogue with supporters, not just a tool for broadcasting. It also calls for further research on the link between digital engagement and real-life loyalty, as well as how gender-equal communication can be developed on social platforms.
