Att bli sjuk i cancer kan få både kroppsliga såväl som existentiella följder. Det kan vara utmanande både för patienten att leva med cancer såväl som för hälso- och sjukvårdspersonal att vårda det som rör det existentiella. Syftet med studien är att belysa den existentiella dimensionen av att leva med cancer. Metoden är en litteraturöversikt av tio kvalitativa vetenskapliga artiklar. Resultatet mynnade ut i tre teman med subteman; Existentiella utmaningar i att leva med cancer, där ”förlusten av identitet”, ”att leva med ovisshet om framtiden” och ”skuld och att känna sig som en börda”, utgjorde subteman. Att hantera existentiella utmaningar, där ”att anta ett förhållningssätt till sjukdomen”, ”meningsfulla aktiviteter för att ta kontroll”, samt ”vikten av emotionellt och socialt stöd” utgjorde subteman. Vägen mot acceptans och hopp, där ”att acceptera sjukdomens närvaro i livet” och ”framtidshopp och en förändrad livssyn” utgjorde subteman. Kunskap om hur den existentiella dimensionen visar sig hos patienter med cancer hjälper sjuksköterskan i vårdandet av det existentiella för att främja en god hälsa samt lindra lidande.

Being diagnosed with cancer can have both physical and existential consequences. It can be a challenge for the patient to live a life that includes cancer, as well as for healthcare professionals to care for the existential needs. The aim of this study is to shed light on the existential dimension of living with cancer. The method used is a literature review of ten qualitative scientific articles. The results were categorized into three main themes with subthemes: Existential challenges of living with cancer, including “loss of identity”, “living with uncertainty about the future”, and “guilt and feeling like a burden”. Coping with existential challenges, including “adopting an approach to the illness”, “meaningful activities to gain control” and “the importance of emotional and social support”. The path toward acceptance and hope, including “accepting the presence of the illness in life” and “hope for the future and a changed perspective on life”. Knowledge about how the existential dimension manifests itself in patients with cancer is important for the nurse's caring practice, as it can promote health and alleviate suffering.
