How to act : How should theatres respond to the new textile waste directive (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

On January 1, 2025, the EU Waste Directive came into force, which places new requirements on producing companies to sort and manage their textile waste. The study aims to investigate how theaters, with a particular focus on Göteborgs Stadsteater, should relate to the new law. This study has conducted a literature research and interviews to map both the state of knowledge in the industry and the challenges posed by the directive. The interviews have mainly focused on identifying the theaters' awareness and preparations regarding the waste directive, while the theoretical framwork has focused on identifying obstacles and existing guidance. A further interview was conducted with the municipal company Kretslopp och Vatten to gather additional information regarding the Waste Directive. The results highlight that there is a knowledge gap within the theater industry, while several challenges are identified. At the same time, guidance and guidelines are identified that can facilitate implementation. The study contributes with insights on the need for increased information, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), collaboration and infrastructure to enable an effective and practical adaptation to the legal requirement. The study suggests horizontal and vertical cooperation, clearer directives and further studies on innovative solutions and the Green Theater Book.
