Consumer Perceptions of Sustainability in the Visual Communication of Fashion Brands : A Comparative Study of Mass Production, Prêt-à-Porter, and Haute Couture Companies (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how visual elements in fashion brand communication and brand positioning influence consumers’ perceptions of environmental sustainability. The focus is on analyzing how color schemes and campaign imagery contribute to the interpretation of sustainability within a brand’s visual identity. Three case companies have been selected: H&M, Stella McCartney, and Dior, these represent different levels within the fashion hierarchy. A basic presentation of the companies’ visual identities and ecological sustainability efforts is provided based on three parameters: resource use, waste management, and transparency. The parameters are developed with reference to three sub-goals of Agenda 2030. The study was conducted using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, where a survey was combined with two focus group interviews. The empirical material consists of color schemes and campaign images from the selected brands. To minimize the risk of bias, brand names were concealed in the survey and in Interview 1. In Interview 2, the brands were instead visible. The survey was completed by 53 participants, of which 52 met the study’s selection criteria. The focus groups consisted of respondents within the target group aged 20–30 with a distinct interest in fashion. The analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis, adapted to each method respectively. The results show that consumers tend to associate environmental sustainability with visual expressions characterized by natural colors, simplicity, and a minimalist design language. At the same time, it is evident that brand awareness has a significant impact on how these visual signals are interpreted. In some cases, the visual interpretation is influenced by the respondent’s perception of the brand’s identity and values. The study highlights the importance of visual coherence in sustainability communication and contributes to a deeper understanding of how visual identity can be used strategically in brand building within the fashion industry.
