Abstract [en]

Translating Wardrobes explores how discarded garments can be reshaped through draping and shape-altering sewing techniques. The vast amount of clothing and textiles ending up in landfills, combined with the EU’s introduction of new regulations for Sustainable Products (ESPR), has motivated this research into systematic approaches for redesigning existing garments. The method employed is rooted in draping and structural fabric manipulation techniques, while using the garments’ original constructions and their potential quality deficiencies as guidance in creating new forms. This project aims to explore more subtle expressions within the field of redesign, emphasizing the dialogue between form and texture, in contrast to the more performative aesthetics currently prevalent in the upcycling field. The resulting collection of nine outfits explores how clothing can move beyond its original form and meaning, offering new expressions and functions for the redesigned pieces.
