Changes in Work Motivation with Reduced Working Hours : a Study on Work Motivation in Relation to a Shortened Workweek (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores a shortened workweek and its impact on employees’ work motivation. It focuses on key factors that contribute to increased motivation in the context of implementing a four-day workweek. This study uses a qualitative research design, involving semi-structured interviews, which combines Self-Determination Theory and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory to analyze employees’ experiences of motivation. The empirical material consists of interviews with six office-based workers whose weekly working hours were reduced from five to four days. The findings suggest that most participants experienced an increase in self-determination in certain aspects of their work, which had a positive effect on their motivation. Reduced working hours combined with maintained salary emerged as the most significant motivational factors. In conclusion, structural changes in working conditions play a crucial role in shaping employees’ perceived autonomy, relatedness, competence, and overall work motivation.
