This project is a study of textures and an exploration of how to translate foods and tableware into knit. By choosing motifs of a breakfast table, themes of personal and cultural nostalgia are being discussed through knit. The study accumulated in a vignette of a floating table, set for a breakfast. The story lies in the details, we are in the middle of the meal, where some have just poured themself a second cup of coffee, a quick reach for the milk causes the jar to tip and the marmalade to blob out. Some are already on the dessert bread and ready for the day ahead, while others enjoy the moment of peace, warmth and safety. Through researching kitsch and analyzing design projects, a definition of kitsch and a method of designing with kitsch were created and tested. This can be seen in the result, in the motifs of familiar objects, the amusement when interacting, and in the method. The project contributes to the field of textile design with knowledge of interpretation of textures to knit. By selectively working with knit and mainly tuck stitches a deeper understanding of the possibilities is obtained. This work is situated in the field of textile art and focuses specifically on textural exploration of familiar objects. It also looks at how knit and texture can be used in storytelling. The process involved exploring kitsch as a theme and defining the parameters and variables of this theme in design.
