Abstract [en]

This thesis is a practice-based research project that explores the design potential of tubular braided rope in creating an immersive and dynamic interior environment—a ”second world”—for feline companions. The interaction between cats and humans within a space, along with the thoughtful use of materials, color, and playful design elements, can significantly improve interior textiles for pet households. As the number of pet-owning households continues to rise annually, there is an increasing need to rethink and redesign spaces shared with pets to ensure both the happiness of the pets and the comfort of their human companions. Therefore, Knot Your Average Space contributes to this field by investigating the design possibilities and potential of using waste yarns to create a dynamic environment that serves as a ”second world” for feline companions, while also providing functionality and comfort for humans. Focusing on material, form, pattern, and color, this project offers design solutions that meet the needs of both humans and their feline companions. The project reveals ways to encourage interaction through textiles for both humans and cats, utilizing textures, colors, and even sound. The result is a collection of five pieces designed for interior spaces.
