Threads of Fate is a textile installation telling the story of the three Norns from Norse mythology - Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld though woven surface textures and form. The project investigates how textile techniques can be used in expressing characterizations through material qualities. Using a combination of jacquard weaving, spinning, fulling, natural dyeing, and explorations with digital sketches, scale models, and color studies, three parallel design tracks were developed each guided by distinct characterizations of one Norn. The installation comprises of six interconnected works that materialize the three Norns. Each Norn is therefore materialized by one woven sculpture and woven textile using surface texture. The shared foundation of color, scale, and characterization contributed to a cohesive atmosphere throughout the entire installation. This interpretation of the Norns departs from literal representations and translates instead the Norns’ symbolic roles into abstract material expressions through form, texture, and textile behavior thus offering a textural, non-figurative approach to myth. This reimagining introduces a new perspective by exploring fate not as narrative illustration but as a tactile, spatial experience.
