This degree work in textile design places itself in the surface pattern design field by investigating digital software and floral motifs. Adobe Substance 3D Designer is a procedural design tool typically used by 3D artists and game developers to build tile-able, repeatable textures. These aspects of this software makes it useful for surface pattern designers. The aim of the project is to explore how Adobe Substance 3D Designer can be used as a textile design tool to create abstract floral patterns for textiles in relation to the body. By using this rather unconventional design software to develop abstract floral patterns, the project offers a unique take on florals, an already popular subject matter in design. The motive of this project is to introduce a useful tool and underline its potential to the textile design field. This project also highlights the value of both digital design tools and a physical outcome. The process developed from hand sketching and ‘scanography’ techniques into experimentation and design development through the mentioned software. These designs were further developed through colour exploration in Photoshop and test printing through digital and transfer printing. The result is three printed textiles with fabrics chosen based on how they would interact with the body. The collection emphasises the textures and forms that can be created using this unconventional software and challenges the traditional floral colour palettes.
