Development of fungal bio-based materials from household food waste using Rhizopus delemar (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The environmental and ethical issues linked to traditional leather production, coupled with the extensive challenge of food waste, have led to the search for sustainable alternatives. This study investigates the conversion of mixed food waste (MFW) into fungal bio-based materials using Rhizopus delemar, a filamentous fungus renowned for its ability to thrive on organic substances. The goal of the research was to optimize the conditions for fungal growth, examine the effects of different substrate concentrations, and analyze the mechanical properties of the materials made from biomass obtained after tanning treatments. Experiments were conducted in both shake flasks and in an airlift bioreactor to evaluate growth efficiency and scale-up potential. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis was performed to monitor metabolic activity, revealing that a MFW concentration of 7.5% led to the highest biomass production (7.49 g/L), while higher concentrations (such as 10%) caused ethanol build-up, which hindered fungal growth. The airlift reactor was successfully scaled, yielding a biomass of 6.6 g/L, confirming its Scalability The fungal biomass was tanned using two different agents, Chestnut N and Indusol ATO, to improve its material properties. Subsequently, the biomass was homogenized and subjected to vacuum suction for the wet laying process. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated structural alterations in the tanned biomass, with distinct peaks demonstrating the cross-linking and stabilization of fungal proteins. Tensile testing showed that the untanned biomass had the highest tensile strength (14.6 MPa) but exhibited low elongation (1.83%), indicating it was brittle. In contrast, the samples tanned with Chestnut N displayed improved flexibility (9.77% elongation) while maintaining moderate strength (0.84 MPa), whereas the Indusol ATO-tanned samples demonstrated greater strength (0.95 MPa) among the tested sheets with reduced elongation (3.51%). This research highlights the potential of Rhizopus delemar to transform food waste into sustainable, Bio-based materials with customizable mechanical properties. The findings promote the development of circular economy strategies by utilizing waste streams and increas the reliance on Bio-based materials
