Equal preschool with different conditions – is it possible? : a study on planning-time in preschool (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Planning time serves as a collective term for the study, which refers to the time that the preschool staff spend outside the group of children on different tasks. Nationally, there is no regulation of this time, neither in scope nor how it should be organized, which creates room for variations around the country. At the same time, the preschool curriculum describes that preschool should be equal regardless of where in the country the children live, which contributes to questions about what is really meant. By placing the planning time in context with the equivalent preschool, this study delves into the two concepts and examines the connection between them. The purpose of this study is to investigate the preschool staff's prerequisites to plan, reflect and develop the content of preschool based on the hypothetical assumption that preschool cannot be equal as long as there is room for variations in the preschool staff's planning time. With developmental ecology theory as a starting point, the planning time is mapped and its importance for the equal preschool is visible. Since the study aims to investigate the amount of planning time, what the planning time is used for and what possible variations occur around the planning time, we chose to conduct a quantitative study. A digital survey was used to collect the preschool staff's experiences regarding their planning time and their view of the equal preschool. In order to increase the respondents' opportunities to answer the survey, some of the questions were supplemented with an answer alternative with space to write freely and a completely open question where the respondents can share other thoughts regarding the planning time. These qualitative elements in the study contributed to an increased understanding of the preschool staff's situation and provided the opportunity to include response alternatives that we had not considered. Through a quantitative study with qualitative elements, it appears that planning time and an equivalent preschool belong together and that a supportive structure is needed for the planning time to contribute to achieving the goal: an equal preschool. Planning time is not sufficiently prioritized in the preschools, which contributes to the preschool staff's feeling of inadequacy in the face of the many tasks that must be completed within the planning time. The results of the study show that the planning time affects the possibilities for an equal preschool and especially when there is room for variations in the planning time.
