Greenwashing : A quantitative method-based study on greenwashing and its impact on consumer’s buying behavior (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how consumers awareness and perception of greenwashing affects their choice of textile products in the fashion industry. Nowadays, sustainability is an increasingly central and important aspect, especially in the fashion industry where the level of consumption has a relatively high environmental impact. To fulfill the purpose of the study, a quantitative method was used, where a survey was designed and sent to university students registered at Borås University, Sweden. A total of 448 respondents participated, who answered the survey by e-mail that was sent through a platform provided by the University of Borås. The result of this study shows a significant relationship between the awareness of greenwashing and their decision-making process of the choices of textiles in the fashion industry. The majority of respondents were aware of what greenwashing is and that they had previously been affected by it. Greenwashing is considered very serious for the environment and society among the respondents, which indicates a strong awareness of the effects of greenwashing. The most important points revealed were that the respondents prefer to buy clothes from well-established companies compared to newer companies where there isn’t as much knowledge about. With the help of this study, companies in the fashion industry can strive to understand consumers concerns about greenwashing and sustainability issues, design strategies and initiatives to be more transparent with their customers, to offer sustainable products but also build loyalty and trust among consumers which benefits the companies in the long run. This study will be written in Swedish.
