Sharing Expert Knowledge in a Knowledge-Intensive Organization : Opportunities and Challenges (English)
Abstract [en]
In knowledge-intensive organizations, knowledge is one of the most valuable resources and often takes on a more complex form, known as expert knowledge. Given the challenges associated with managing and sharing knowledge, how is expert knowledge effectively shared? This study provides an overall understanding of how expert knowledge is shared in a knowledge-intensive organization, how knowledge sharing meets the organization’s need for expert knowledge, and the formats in which experts prefer to receive and share this knowledge. These questions are answered through five semi-structured interviews with experts in a knowledge-intensive organization.
This study shows that expert knowledge is shared through both formal and informal processes in the chosen knowledge-intensive organization. Formal channels - such as meetings, training programs, and digital platforms - ensure that knowledge is shared systematically. Meanwhile, informal channels such as spontaneous conversations and collaborative work sessions foster a dynamic and innovative work environment. Effective knowledge sharing is essential to meet the organization’s need for expert knowledge, enabling the resolution of complex problems and facilitating development within the field. To adapt to market changes and create a competitive advantage, continuous knowledge sharing is crucial to ensure that employees have the information and expertise they need.
Experts prefer to receive and share expert knowledge through various formats and channels to effectively communicate both tacit and explicit knowledge.
Therefore they combine all different processes of The SECI model, which includes knowledge sharing through research, lectures, courses, digital platforms, “learning-by-doing” and discussions. Relationship building and tailoring information to the audience are also considered key factors in promoting effective knowledge sharing.
