This bachelor thesis explores organizational identity in the context of Swedish local libraries. It explores how organizational identity is formed and maintained by the members of that organization, especially regarding the local community and the broader library institution in which local libraries are active. Through the lens of Richard Scott’s (2013) analytical framework of the three pillars of institutions this thesis uses semi-structured interviews with librarians and library managers to uncover common tendencies amongst library personnel in regard to the formation and maintenance of organizational identity and uncover how it relates to the local community and who has the power to change that identity. The results indicate a strong tendency amongst the interviewees to lean against the normative pillar of Scott’s analytical framework which is connected to values, norms and ideals. This is especially true regarding questions of legitimacy. The thesis suggests further research is needed in order to explore the organizational identity of libraries.
