Living with Stroke : A Literature Review of Patients' Experiences (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Living with a stroke is a subjective experience. The phenomenon varies depending on the patient's unique experiences and feelings. Stroke can occur due to risk factors such as hypertension. Prompt diagnosis and treatment can reduce brain damage. Stroke can have significant consequences for the patient's health and quality of life, leading to substantial suffering. Nurses have a responsibility to provide person-centered care and address the patient's needs with respect to promote recovery. The purpose of this study is to highlight patients' experiences of life after a stroke. The chosen method was a literature-based study where qualitative research has been analyzed. Articles were retrieved from the databases Cinahl and PubMed, and a total of ten articles were included. The results showed that stroke patients experienced significant physical limitations and emotional challenges. A supportive network of family, friends, and healthcare professionals was crucial for their recovery. Being involved in their care through clear and simple communication was central to person-centered care. The strive to return to a normal life served as a driving force for developing coping strategies that made life more manageable. The conclusions showed that the patients' profound experiences of life after a stroke required attention. The nurse's role was central in promoting the patient's health, alleviating suffering, and creating a care relationship where the patient's own needs were the focus.
