Patients’ experiences of undergoing awake surgery : A systematic review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

An increasing number of surgical procedures are performed using local or regional anesthesia. This reduces the risks compared to general anesthesia while simultaneously increasing the competency requirements of the operating room nurses to adequately see to the patient’s needs. Further research is thus required to describe the patients’ experience of undergoing surgery while awake. The aim of this study is to describe the patients’ experience of undergoing awake surgery. A systematic review of the existing literature was undertaken using thematic analysis. Three main themes and subsequent subthemes emerged. “An unfamiliar environment” encompassed “Sensory perceptions in an unfamiliar environment” and “The patient in the highly technological operating room”. The second theme “To participate” consisted of “Being included” and “Communicating needs without being in the way”. The third theme encompassed “A sense of control”, “A sense of fear” and “A Sense of Safety”. The study concluded that improvements are needed in regard to including the patient and a greater focus is required on information and person- centered care for awake patients in the operating room.
