Abstract [en]

The aim of the project Framework for circular textiles 3, financed by the Swedish Innovation Agency, Vinnova, has been to work with conditions for large scale use of recycled raw materials and developing frameworks regarding classification of textiles for material recycling and for assessment of materials and products' recyclability and circularity. The project had a special focus on the establishment of a framework where textiles for recycling were classified based on parameters developed in close collaboration with technology developers and users, to set a system of classification codes. The project has also showcased how a framework can enable efficient use of resources and give companies concrete opportunities to work with recycled, and recyclable, materials that can become a stable quality of products produced with recycled content in the next step. Further, the properties of textiles listed as more or less attractive in the classification codes may be used as a guideline for circular design of garments, or for implementation of differentiated fees in a coming textile EPR. The goal was to finalize an easy-to-use tool for the textile industry. Through dialogues with industry partners, the project identified key areas where standards are needed. Based on these insights, the project recommends developing policies and standards as a first step addressing these gaps. The project also visualised and highlighted several parameters to make better fibre and material choice salready in the design and product development phase. To enable circularity and recycling there is a need of different tools to make better and more sustainable decisions in the value chain, a priority that is very highand welcomed by the industry.
