Uncovering AI : A quantitative study of Swedish students’ ability to identify deepfake (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines Swedish students' ability to identify videos manipulated by deepfake technology and their self-perception of this ability. The study is motivated by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfake technology, which pose new and serious threats to information security. It emphasizes the need for increased awareness of deepfakes to better address the threats posed by this technology. The study also explores the abilities of IT-educated students and non-IT-educated students and compares the groups to determine if there are differences in their ability to detect deepfakes. We conducted a quantitative survey where Swedish students were asked to distinguish between authentic and deepfake-manipulated videos. They were also asked to provide confidence level in their answers to measure the correlation between confidence and actual results. The results show that Swedish students can identify deepfakes in about two out of three cases. IT-educated students performed slightly better than non-IT-educated students, but non-IT-educated students were generally more confident in their answers.
