Abstract [en]

One of the primary methods for delivering IT services is predominantly through mobile applications, which are downloaded and installed on the phone's hardware resources. Most of these applications are of the native variant. Progressive Web Applications (PWA) have gradually emerged as an alternative approach for IT service delivery, where it enhances user experience, and reduces the cost of hardware resources. However, despite the benefits with progressive web applications, they have not reached the same level of adoption as native applications. This thesis focuses on understanding some of the barriers that may explain the slow adoption of PWAs in the context of Sweden. This is particularly significant due to the lack of research on the slow adoption of PWAs. The slow adoption can be connected to the technology diffusion of an innovation, wherein the theory of innovation model has been applied to comprehend why the diffusion rate of PWAs has been slow. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the barriers of the adoption of Progressive Web Applications(PWA), and to understand the reason and why they have not achieved the same extent as native applications. The thesis addresses the following research question: What are the barriers of adopting progressive web applications? To achieve this, a qualitative research methodology is employed, aiming to gain a comprehensive understanding of diverse perspectives, primarily from IT companies, supplemented by insights from Swedish IT application users. The data collection phase involves semi-structured interviews conducted with both companies and end-users to ensure a thorough exploration of various viewpoints. The analysis of the collected data with the developers revealed several barriers that have impeded the adoption of progressive web applications. These barriers include the expectations with those applications, the concerns regarding application security, and the challenges related to the discoverability. These barriers have significantly impeded PWA adoption, as they have made it difficult for end-users to discover these applications easily. Furthermore, slow technological implementation and security vulnerabilities due to limited access to data have exacerbated the situation. On the end-user side, similar barriers are reported, including security risks associated with web-based data access and the lack of discoverability of PWAs. Security, performance, and functionality are paramount for end-users when utilizing applications built with PWA technology. The identified barriers were also analyzed in relation to categories outlined in the technology diffusion (TD), which provides insights into adoption dynamics. In conclusion, the barriers to PWA adoption predominantly revolve around technology, security concerns, user expectations, performance, and discoverability. Future efforts should focus on devising new strategies to enhance PWA discoverability and ensure robust data security, while continuously evolving application functionalities to enhance overall success. Eight hypotheses are presented that can be evaluated in future research.
