Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Psykisk ohälsa ökar hos ungdomar i Sverige och i övriga världen. Skolsköterskans roll är central gällande att identifiera tidiga tecken på psykisk ohälsa samt i att verka hälsofrämjande. Psykisk ohälsa kan yttra sig på en mängd olika sätt, bidragande faktorer kan bland annat vara skolstress och krav från omgivningen. Skolsköterskan ägnar stor del av arbetstiden åt psykisk ohälsa hos ungdomar. Det vårdande mötet inger en trygghet till ungdomen under förutsättning att skolsköterskan visar närvaro och intresse. Den vårdande relationen syftar bland annat till att främja psykisk hälsa. Syfte: Att beskriva skolsköterskors upplevelser av att möta psykisk ohälsa hos ungdomar i högstadiet. Metod: Åtta informanter intervjuades och data analyserades med kvalitativ innehållsanalys som presenterades i tre generiska kategorier; Ett samhällsansvar, Känslomässiga utmaningar och Behov av stabilitet, med tillhörande subkategorier. Resultat: Majoriteten av skolsköterskorna upplevde en ökad psykisk ohälsa hos ungdomar, där högpresterande tjejer utmärkte sig. Känslor av maktlöshet och otillräcklighet upplevdes hos skolsköterskorna i att påverka ungdomars psykiska hälsa. Även kontinuitet och lyhördhet i relationen till ungdomen var avgörande för att kunna nå fram. Skolsköterskorna upplevde behov av mer kunskap och utbildning i mötet med ungdomars psykiska ohälsa. Slutsats: Ytterligare kunskap och utbildning skulle kunna stärka skolsköterskan i det hälsofrämjande arbetet med psykisk ohälsa och tid för relationsbyggande är av stor vikt.

Abstract [en]

Background: Mental health issues increase among adolescents both in Sweden and in other parts of the world. Identifying early signs of mental health issues and working with health promoting is crucial for the school nurses. Mental health issues can be expressed in several ways, school stress and expectations surrounding environments are factors affecting mental health. School nurses’ devotes a significant part of their working hours to mental health issues. When school nurses’ are present and genuinely interested the caring encounter generates security for the adolescent. The caring relationship aims to promote mental health issues. Aim: Describe school nurses’ experiences in meeting mental health issues in adolescents in junior high school Method: Eight informants were interviewed and data were analyzed with qualitative content analysis which was presented in three generic categories: Responsibility of society, emotional challenges and Need for stability, each one with belonging subcategories. Result: The majority of the school nurses’ experienced increased mental health problems in adolescents and girls with high performance demands are at risk. Feelings of powerlessness and inadequacy were shown when school nurses were trying to improve mental health issues. In order to connect with adolescents continuity is crucial. The school nurses’ experienced lack of acknowledgement and education facing mental health issues in adolescents. Conclusion: Further knowledge and education could empower the school nurse in the health promotion work regarding mental health issues and time for building relationships is of huge importance.
