Challenges in collection development of multilingual literature in public and school libraries : a document study of articles in specialist press (English)
Abstract [en]

This qualitative document study takes its theoretical starting point from Evans and Saponaro's Collection development process model from 2005. It also considers a number of media theories. The study takes a closer look at how specialist press cover and discuss challenges connected to working with collection development of multilingual literature in public libraries. The empirical articles chosen for the study were chosen from two well-known specialist press publications in Sweden; Biblioteksbladet and Svensk Biblioteksförening that was submitted to a thematic analysis. The purpose has not been to try and see if the specialist press measures up to the truth claims proffered by academic research. Rather the interest lay in a more fundamental fashion trying to identify the way in which the specialist press conveys the challenges for library work with collection development of multilingual languages. The challenges identified for collection development in the context of multilingual languages are almost identical between the academic research and the specialist press where only a few differences are apparent. But there are bigger differences too which mostly consist of typical genre-specific features and narrative trademarks that determine the characteristics of how academic research on the one hand and specialist press on the other are able to write and deliver their content. The study presents a new and additional piece of information to the overall picture concerning the public libraries' work with collection development of multilingual literature in Sweden.
