The aim of this thesis is to examine how librarians at Swedish public libraries view the seed library in the context of the public library's contemporary role in society. In order to gain a broader understanding of what is meant by contemporary public libraries I start from the concept of Library 2.0. By interviewing staff who work with the seed library at 10 different Swedish public libraries I have been able to identify different themes for the activities connected to the seed library service. These themes have then been catagorized according to The Four Spaces model created by Jochumsen et al. (2012). The analysis of the libraries' lending of non-traditional material can lead to a more unified administration and a clearer picture of what libraries want to achieve with the extended service.
