A dusty bookshelf or an educational resource? : A critical discourse analysis of school libraries and the reading crisis in daily press 2022-2023 (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to examine how school libraries and the reading crisis is portrayed in connection to each other in Swedish daily newspapers by using critical discourse analysis. This is connected to the Swedish government announcing a plan to provide more funding toward books in schools and school libraries in an attempt to halter declining numbers in reading and reading comprehension. Understanding how the school libraries are viewed as a means to get more children to read can contribute to understanding how the discourse of school libraries are constructed and replicated by and for the Swedish public. The study is based on 16 published texts in daily newspapers written by a wide assortment of people of different professions during 2022-2023. The school library is constructed in the texts as a place for books as well as an educational resource, the main role of the school library is perceived as an antipole for the influence of digital media and social media as well as an agency for promoting reading.
