Risk Management of inbound logistics : a study on e-commerce companies (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In today’s globalized market, outsourcing has become a common strategy for companies to reduce costs, but it has also created complex and vulnerable supply chains. Events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the blockage in the Suez Canal have had significant impacts on Chinese manufacturing and the transportation chain, revealing weaknesses in these systems. These incidents have highlighted the need for robust risk management, where identifying risks and adapting to market changes have become crucial for corporate survival. This study aims to investigate the risks involved in inbound logistics for e-commerce companies, and to examine and compare their approaches and management processes to minimize these risks. The study is limited to three focus areas: procurement and sourcing, transportation, and goods reception, which are based on the interview guide. By comparing the approaches of different companies, the study also explores whether there are distinct differences in risk management processes based on company size and product category. The method for conducting this study is based on a theoretical framework, with data collected through literary means. Subsequently, the study builds on qualitative interviews with e-commerce and freight forwarding companies, focusing on inbound processes. The findings are followed by an analysis with an associated discussion, where previous theories are used as supporting arguments to ultimately answer the research questions of the study. This study reveals that the primary risk within inbound logistics is delayed deliveries, which can be caused by external or local factors such as production halts, pandemics, or the Suez Canal. The study emphasizes the importance of flexibility and rapid adaptability in companies to reduce vulnerability and minimize risks. The results also highlight the significance of solid partnerships throughout the supply chain with clear agreements that define responsibility and obligations in the transportation chain. In conclusion, there is an indication of differences between company sized and product categories in their risk management processes, but this study lacks sufficient data to reliably ascertain these differences.
