The Auditor's Attitude and Acceptance of AI : A Qualitative Study on Cognitive and Affective Influencing Factors (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
With the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution, the auditing industry is facing significant changes. The interest in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into auditing processes is growing rapidly, with the goal of streamlining workflows and improving the quality of audit work. Despite the promising potential, AI is met with mixed reactions within the industry, particularly among older auditors and individuals with limited technical competence, who express skepticism and uncertainty about the implementation of the technology. This study examines how AI is impacting the auditing industry, with a specific focus on auditors' attitudes and acceptance of the technology. The aim is to explore how emotional and cognitive factors interact within the technology acceptance model (TAM) and how these factors influence the adoption of AI in the auditing industry. The study applies a qualitative methodology with a deductive approach. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with ten auditors who have varying levels of experience and work at companies of different sizes. The selection of informants was strategic to capture a broad range of perspectives, and the interviews focused on understanding the informants' perceptions of AI's usefulness, as well as their emotional responses to the technology. The results indicate that AI is seen as an effective tool for improving both the efficiency and quality of audit work. However, acceptance of the technology varies depending on the auditor's age, experience, and emotional attitude toward the technology. Older auditors are generally more skeptical, while younger and tech-savvy individuals are more inclined to embrace AI. The conclusions of the study highlight the need to integrate both cognitive and affective components into future models of technology acceptance in auditing, to ensure the successful implementation of AI. The study also offers recommendations on how companies can foster a positive attitude toward AI and facilitate the transition to AI-based work processes.
