Abstract [en]

This study analyses job advertisements for librarian professions in the USA and Germany as part of a quantitative study. The aim is to identify differences and similarities regarding the required training, knowledge, professional experience, and other requirements. At the same time, it is examined whether these requirements differ between the various types  of libraries and to what extent employees find different conditions concerning pay and security of employment. Job advertisements published on the job portals ALA JobLIST and OpenBiblioJobs in February and November 2023 served as the basic population. Subsequently, job advertisements that were not published by libraries, e.g. law firms, and that did not list library-related activities, e.g. janitor jobs, were sorted out. The remaining 210 job ads from the USA and 421 job ads from Germany were analysed. The results indicate considerable differences between the library systems in Germany and the USA. The most significant differences can be found in the possible and required education and issues such as pay, protection against dismissal, and the permanent or non-permanent nature of positions.
