Implementing circular business models in the textile industry : A case study on challenges and opportunities in aligning with the EU strategy for sustainable and circular textiles. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The Swedish textile industry faces significant challenges in its transition towards more sustainable production, driven by increased climate impact and new requirements from the EU strategy for ‘Sustainable and Circular Textiles’. The 2022 EU strategy aims to transform the textile industry by promoting products that are sustainable, repairable, and recyclable, produced from recycled materials and free from harmful substances. The research identifies a knowledge gap on how fashion companies and their business models can adapt to the increased sustainable requirements, which this study aims to address by exploring practical applications of theoretical knowledge. The aim of the study is to explore the adaptation of fashion companies to the EU legislation on ‘Sustainable and Circular Textiles’. By identifying the investigating challenges, adaptations, and opportunities for the transition towards promoting a more sustainable textile industry. The study results aim to contribute to new literature by mapping the transition in the interaction between fashion companies and suppliers to achieve the new legal requirements. In conclusion, there is a considerable amount of uncertainty in the transition to the EU strategy for "sustainable and circular textiles" as a result of the European Commission delaying concrete actions that should be taken to pursue the strategy. The study concludes that the case company should integrate a circular business model that takes into account the development of innovative and more sustainable material choices together with external guidance, virtualization and circular revenue streams.
