The work Sculpting the Outdoors investigates outdoor clothing through fashion with an artistic and sculptural approach. The work is rooted in rigid gender roles and rather generic construction techniques and colour schemes in outdoor clothing and aims at questioning existing norms and standards. Two main methods in the context of sculpting were used for the work. The first one included artistic and performative drapings and paintings done on the body of the author by the author which then served as patterns for knitted fabrics. The knitted textiles were consequently used to create garment pieces inspired by base layers. The second method included intuitively draping and sculpting mainly functional fabrics used on a mannequin, where the interaction with the evolving piece was crucial. Sculpting the Outdoors serves as an artistic inspiration to actors in the outdoor clothing industry and can be seen as a contribution to making the area more diverse and inclusive. The work will not radically change outdoor clothing, but at the very least hopes to start a conversation about existing norms.
