This degree project explores the significant role of “floats” in weaving, particularly within the Jacquard technique, highlighting their contribution to creating intricate patterns and textures. Floats, which are lengths of weft threads that extend over multiple warp threads before interlacing, vary in length and can influence the visual and tactile qualities of woven textiles. This project aims to develop unique patterns and textures in woven textiles by employing a broad range of hand manipulation techniques on Jacquard-woven floats particularly post-weaving techniques such as embroidery and hemstitching, to push the boundaries of traditional textile design. This approach seeks to infuse artisanal craftsmanship into Jacquard weaving, enriching its visual and textural qualities and opening new avenues for creative expression in textile design.
