Consumers decisions in the housing market during up and down going economic cycles (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

During 2021, Sweden entered a down going economic period that affected individuals and their economy. The economic conditions in Sweden were affected by the change in the economy, leading consumers to face increased inflation and changing economic circumstances. As a result of rising interest rates and decreased purchasing power among individuals, the housing market becomes impacted by a down-going economic cycle. Previous research indicates that different economic periods influence consumer behavior and the consumer decision making process. There is a significant amount of research on the consumer decision making process and its various stages. However, there is limited research that highlights the difference between the purchase decision process in up and down-going economic cycles. Therefore, the purpose of the following study is to examine how the purchase decision process for consumers in the housing market differs during up and down-going economic cycles. The research approach is quantitative with a deductive approach and is based on data collected from a web survey sent to individuals who bought a residence between the years 2015 and 2014. The sample was divided into two groups representing the down-going economic period, from 2015 to 2021, and the up-going economic period, from 2022 to 2024. To investigate whether there is a difference in the purchase decision process for consumers who bought a home during an economic down-going economic period versus an economic up-going period, t-tests were conducted. The results show that there is a significant difference in the purchase decision process for the information search step and the purchase decision step. The study shows that consumers spend more time searching for information about their purchase during a down-going economic period and experience the buying decision as a bigger risk. Furthermore, the study shows that consumers who bought their house during a down-going economic period tend to choose their first choice. The rest of this thesis is written in Swedish.
