The ideal net benefits of critical thinking when using ChatGPT in Senior High School
2024 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The use of ChatGPT by students in the educational environment has shown affecting the learning process. Earlier research shows that the information from the AI technology is not always accurate and there are potential risks for the students. This in turn highlights the importance of considering the use of ChatGPT in school and how the students can be affected. The use of ChatGPT can affect the students' critical thinking, as the student can act him- or herself and not reflect on the information received. During this thesis it will be investigated in what ways ChatGPT can be used to complement classroom teaching to enhance students' critical thinking and learning outcomes. To be able to answer this a focus group study with an assignment, discussion and a questionnaire was conducted. The focus group study was held with ten students from a senior high school in Gothenburg, Sweden. Through the study, discussion and the questionnaire resulted in a deeper understanding of how it could be used to enhance critical thinking but still create value. The focus group study resulted in identifying net benefits that are presented in a figure. The net benefits belong to three different identified categories and can be either positive or negative, however all of them are valid. The net benefits helped to identify recommendations for before, during and after using ChatGPT in senior high school. The conclusions of the study is that by following these recommendations, it is possible to enhance students' critical thinking and create value in the use of ChatGPT. It is also important for the teachers to be a part of there commendations since everything does not rely on the student.
