Manager roles and sustainable development : A qualitative study on manager roles impact on a more sustainable development at Swedish textile companies (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore the managerial roles impact on more sustainable development on Swedish textile firms. Our study identifies what barriers impact managers decision-making when implementing sustainable practices. The focus is on environmental sustainability of textile value chains on Swedish companies. The study contributes to increased understanding of more sustainable decision-making in manager roles. The study used a qualitative method in the form of five semi-structured interviews with managers of Swedish textile companies. The respondents were collected using a strategic selection, based on job titles. The respondents consist of managers from departments such as production, purchasing, quality and sustainability. The collected data was later analyzed through a thematic analysis where six themes were identified; management strategies, legal requirements and directives, barriers, CSR, personal values, and consumer behavior. These themes were further analyzed with the theories presented in the literature review, which consisted of several theories such as CSR, 3BL, lean management, circular economy, GSCM, CLSCM, and decision-making and leadership. The result identified several factors that influence the managerial roles decision-making towards sustainable development including management strategies, personal values, legal requirements, and economic resources. The results of the study are important for companies to understand what factors influence managers to develop and promote sustainability.
