Abstract [en]

This thesis is only available in Swedish, but a translated abstract has been provided to describe how and why it was written, together with a simplification of its results and conclusion. The web has evolved many times over since its inception in the late 80's, and there are now many consortiums and institutions that create and maintain guidelines for how websites should be developed and maintained, which are also represented in international standards, as well as in laws and regulation.

 These guidelines are often based on best practices for accessibility on the web, which was also the focal point of this thesis, where institutions for higher education in Sweden were identified as being subject to a lot of the available regulation and also seen as an interesting area to study, as they and their websites are used by visitors of many different backgrounds.

 The study for this thesis was built on four different methods of evaluation for accessibility. This combination of methods was also identified as a interesting subject to include in the overall study, with regards to how it could be better than just one or two methods. These methods resulted in four individual results which were analysed and compared between. Regarding the usage of multiple methods it was identified as having a positive impact on the study, as well as what kind and how the results were achieved, but may be unsuitable for larger evaluation projects.

 Further, the results and analysis of the accessibility aspects shows that while something is usable, it may still be inaccessible, and vice versa, which was the case for all websites included in the study. The most obvious problems found during the evaluations were regarding document structure and layout, both of which heavily influence how a website is interacted with using either a mouse and keyboard or a screen reader, as well as how its content is perceived.
