Reading habits of pupils in grade 3 and how teachers adapt the reading teaching after these habits (English)
Abstract [en]

Abstract

Digital media are said to be the reason that young people today don’t have such a high reading interest in books. We have a hypothesis that young people still read and have a high reading interest but that the reading takes place in other medias

Purpose

The purpose with this study is to examine what genres and media that pupils in grade 3 in Swedish elementary schools prefer to read and how the teachers adjust their teaching based on the pupils’ reading habits and the digitizing. The questions used to create structure in the study are:

  • What genres and medias does pupils in grade 3 prefer to read?
  •  How do the teachers adjust their teaching to the pupils reading interest?
  •  How do the teachers look on their students reading ability and changed reading habits based on the digitizing?

Method

The method used was a combination between qualitative and quantitative method. The reason behind being that the combination could help in finding if the teachers and pupils had the same view on the pupils reading habits. The qualitative method resulted in an interview study with six active grade 3 teachers in five different schools. The pupils in grade 3 was asked to complete a survey about their reading habits. Both the interview answers and the survey answers were analyzed and compared before the result was presented.

Result

Many of the pupils that participated in this study have a good reading interest. Books are still the most occurring genre with pupils in grade 3 but are followed by video games and social medias. Most of the pupils prefer to read on an iPad or computer compared to the traditional paper book. The teachers are aware of their pupils preferred genres and medias to read in for the most part. For now, the digitizing is seen as something positive according to most of the teachers, but they say that most schools are yet to have the right equipment’s or conditions. Currently the equipment schools have is used for pupils with special needs. Most of the teachers sees a bright future for a more digitized school though. But because the school are left behind in the digital development the pupils guardians receive an important job to show all the reading possibilities there is to find.
