This study examines public librarians’ reading promotion of fiction for children. Reading promotion is a diverse field with few fixed boundaries. Therefore it can be hard to fundamentally understand what reading promotion actually constitutes and how it is performed. The purpose of this study is to gather knowledge on how public librarians can view and work with fiction and fiction reading to promote reading for children. Material for the study is gathered through qualitative semi-structured interviews and the material is then analyzed with the help of theoretical models for reading. The results show that the librarians interviewed work to promote fiction for children in a multitude of ways. The results also show that their chosen activities and work methods can be understood through the theoretical models for reading to gather knowledge on what kind of views motivates public librarians’ work to promote fiction reading for children and how this work is performed.
