The aim of this thesis was to examine the ways in which librarians work to stimulate the joy of reading in boys. Four children- and school librarians were chosen for interviews in which they were asked questions about boys' reading and the approaches they used to help boys. The librarians were asked if they perceived boys' reading as problematic, what methods they used to stimulate the joy of reading and if they thought it would be helpful to work with boys and girls in different ways. They were asked what they thought was the biggest challenges in changing the boys’ attitudes towards reading and what they would do if they could choose freely without any constraints in time or money. Aidan Chambers' "The circle of reading" was used to compare a theory about reading to the ways in wich the librarians worked and their thoughts about how to initiate reading. All the librarians showed awareness about the situation with boys' decreasing reading abilities and they had all developed approaches to help stimulate boys’ reading in slightly different ways. Their approaches included carefully planned media acquisition and book talks as well as displaying the books according to different themes such as genres and organising special book shelves for popular book series.
