Nurses’ information seeking in everyday practice : barriers and solutions. Interview study from a user perspective with nurse practitioners´. (English)
Abstract [en]
This thesis investigates clinical nurses’ information seeking
and information use through semi-structured interviews with
six nurse practitioners, nurses with further education.
Previous research shows that nurses have problems
implementing evidence-searching at the clinic because of
organization, stress and heritage of an old practice that does
not incorporate the academic education.
The theoretical framework consists of T.D. Wilson’s
information seeking behavior model and R.H. Orr’s model of
information needs. The empirical material is analyzed to find
problematic barriers and solutions. Furthermore the study
gives answer to the questions; what the nurses’ think of their
education, what the barriers towards information seeking and
information use are and suggestions of solution. The result
shows that older education contained more medicine and
practice. Modern education emphasizes nursing theory and
reflection to a higher degree, which effectuate nurses to be
more self-contained and better information seekers. Clinical
nurses have a hard time seeking information evidence in
everyday work. To participate in projects, groups of
interests, meeting a clinical librarian at work, meetings and
nursing rounding were found positive but only possible if
organized. A problem is that the librarians are forgotten as a
resource and that the clinical nurses do not view them as an
ordinary team member as for instance the physiotherapist.
Most of the nurses wish for more support and inspiration
dialogue, especially with clinical lectors that could work as
bridge builders between clinic and academy. They also wish
for more contact with clinical librarians, standard nurse plans
and more open and allowing leaders.
