The purpose of this master thesis was to study the librarians’ assignment at the public accesses computers, especially how the librarians perceive what their task is and what their task should be. In order to answer these questions a series of ten qualitative interviews –inspired by the phenomenographic approach – was conducted with librarians who were employed at small public libraries in municipalities with 5 000 - 25 000 residents in Sweden. The conclusions in the master thesis were that librarians have both similarities and differences in how they perceive their tasks at the public computers. The most essential task was helping the user with information seeking. The librarians also perceived that it should be included in their duties to help users with the technical/practical issues at the public computers. Competence, time and assets were finally three outlying factors which affected in what extent the librarians were able to help the users.
